The socio-economic impact of conservation: The Safe Islands for Seabirds LIFE project
2017
Using the Safe Islands for Seabirds LIFE project as a case study, we assessed the socio-economic impact of a nature conservation project on the local community, focusing on the wealth created and the jobs supported directly and indirectly by the project. The Safe Islands for Seabirds project took place during 2009-2012, mainly on Corvo Island, the smallest and least populated island of Portugal's Azores Archipelago. To assess the impact of the project we used a combination of methods to analyse the project expenditure, the jobs created directly as a result of it, and, by means of multipliers, the incomes and jobs it supported indirectly. We estimate that during 2009-2012 direct expenditure …
Tourism destination development: economic impacts evaluation due to intercultural food festivals
2014
The design and realization of events has become a relevant activity because it can accelerate the growth of European tourist destinations. Events provide a new demand for goods and services, which, in addition to local consumption, leads to an increase in revenues and employment. Moreover, when an event becomes an attractor, it generates new motivations for visiting a destination in addition to the traditional ones, which are generally linked to the presence of natural resources. While the issue can rely on extensive literature today, it established itself only at the end of the last century. Many authors have addressed the issue of the economic impact of events, amongst whom Grado, Strauss…
Evaluating Socio-economic Impact of Age-Friendly Environments
2018
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2007), physical and social environments are key determinants of whether people can remain healthy, independent and autonomous. Health and well-being are not only determined by our personal characteristics but also by the envi-ronment where we were born and where we live throughout our life (WHO 2015). In fact, promoting age-friendly environments (AFE) is the most effective approach for responding to demographic change because they empower elderly people to age in better health, they pro-mote their social inclusion and active participation, and they help them to live autonomously into old age (Parent 2012). AFE foster health, well-being and t…
Alien Insect Impact on Cultural Heritage and Landscape: an Underestimated Problem
2017
The impact of alien invasive insects on cultural heritage and landscapes is very often neglected; even though, more than 50% of species that threaten cultural heritage in Europe are of exotic origin. In addition they are more aggressive. Several examples and a description, are given of the most dangerous alien insects present in heritage sites that constitute a risk for the conservation of cultural property: museum collections, libraries, archives and historic buildings. Globalisation has increased this phenomenon but traces of the accidental introduction of insect pests have occurred since Roman times. The paper discusses the need to implement an estimation of the costs that arise from the…

Government Economic Regulations in the Sphere of Higher Education during COVID-19 Crisis in Central Asia
2021
Bakalaura darbā tiek pētīta valsts ekonomiskā iejaukšanās, izmantojot augstākās izglītības ekonomisko regulējumu piemēru Vidusāzijā laikā no 2020. gada marta līdz 2021. gada martam.
Regional economic structures in Finland : analyses of location and regional economic impact
2007
This dissertation consists of nine empirical studies which seek to broaden understanding of Finnish regional economic structures. These studies are divided between two topics: 1) regional specialization and industrial concentration in Finland, and 2) regional economic impact analysis. The empirical studies are preceded by an introduction, in which the theoretical background, outline and the main results of the thesis are presented. The research on the first topic is guided by the new economic geography literature, from which answers are sought to the location and agglomeration questions addressed in this dissertation. Evidence is found of increasing post-recession specialization in Finland.…
¿Por qué Turismo? Repensar el auge del turismo
2017
In the present work we consider the reasons that explain the spectacular tourism boom in the last 5 decades. The traditional responses to this phenomenon, presented a whole "frond" of tourist-economical interactions: tourism as a "motor of development", tourism as "dynamizing the economic system", etc. Therefore, our objective is to contrast this Tourism-Development-Economic Growth framework, certainly suggestive. In order to avoid mystifications it is necessary to define somewhat ambiguous concepts such as Development (and its interactions with Tourism) and to deepen the economic impact of Tourism, the ultimate root of all that "frond" that seems to be the basis of This formidable theoreti…
